The effectiveness of using virtual reality to enhance safety education: A meta-analysis

 Abstract | 摘要

Virtual reality (VR) enables the low-cost simulation of hazardous situations and has been used widely in safety education. This meta-analysis was conducted to investigate the effectiveness of VR use in this context in terms of students’ learning outcomes (motivation, presence, safety behaviour and safety knowledge). Thirty-six articles published between 2008 and 2023 were included. The overall effect size for VR use in safety education was medium (g = 0.53). Significant positive effects on motivation, presence, safety behaviour and safety knowledge were observed, supporting the effectiveness of VR in safety education. Primary moderating effects associated with the effectiveness of VR use included age, learning application type, treatment duration, pre-training, feedback timing and feedback level. Based on the results, we make suggestions regarding the impacts of instructional principles and hardware limitations on VR-based instruction.

This order should not—and cannot—be reversed.” Artists are pioneers, exploring diverse possibilities of expression; designers, by contrast, are guardians, focusing on achieving objectives and using the most effective means to convey messages and solve problems. The essence of design lies more in profound thinking than in technical execution. Every good design emerges from long periods of reflection and refinement, where research, fieldwork, and lived experience are indispensable.

「設計師應該從理解需求出發,如工匠般打磨,並期待有一天能被人們視為藝術。這個順序不應也不能被調整。」藝術家是開創者,嘗試各種事物表達的可能性;設計師則是守成者,需要以實現目標為核心,運用最有效的方式傳遞訊息並解決問題。設計的核心是深度思考遠勝於技術實作。每一件好設計,都源自於長時間的沉澱與推敲,而研究、實地調查與親身體驗亦是不可或缺的。

Education is a fascinating field, one that not only explores how to teach and how to learn, but also examines how information is processed and transformed, and where and when learning takes place. Each individual absorbs and constructs knowledge in their own way, making education inherently challenging. By reflecting on problems from different perspectives, we can discover new possibilities. “What is the value of this?”—this question once felt like a denial of my efforts. Over time, however, I realized it is an opportunity: a pause to reconsider whether what we do truly holds sufficient value. The purpose of research is not merely to seek answers, but to uncover latent possibilities through observation, experimentation, and reflection. Whether in academia or practice, continuous learning and awareness of emerging trends are essential to realizing the true value of research.

The essence of transdisciplinary collaboration lies in integrating diverse professional perspectives and transforming differences into opportunities for innovation. It is not merely cooperation, but a process of profound mutual understanding and respect. Only by genuinely seeing from the standpoint of others can a team design solutions that foster positive growth for everyone involved. The challenges of design include learning how to communicate effectively with partners from different backgrounds and how to achieve results that surpass individual capabilities. Ultimately, the goal of design and collaboration is to create solutions that address complex problems while enriching the experiences and values of all participants.
